Punjab Sports Minister congratulate pugilist Simranjit Kaur

Chandigarh, Jul 29 (UNI) Punjab Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi has congratulated Simranjit Kaur for his stupendous achievement in the President Cup here on Monday.

'Pugilist Simranjit Kaur of district Ludhiana has done Punjab proud. The boxer has won Gold Medal in the 23rd President Cup International Boxing Tournament held at Indonesia,' he said.

The minister also divulged that Simranjit Kaur won Bronze in previous year’s World Championship and now this Gold Medal has added another feather to her cap. Crediting her parents, Coaches and the Sher-E-Punjab Academy of Chakar for this shining glory, Rana Sodhi hoped that Simranjit Kaur would also excel at World Championship as well as at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

He also said that Simranjit Kaur first used to represent the country in 64kg weight category whereas now she takes part in 60kg category as the Olympics has 60kg category.

Earlier, Simranjit Kaur won Silver medal in the Asian Championship at Bangkok and now in the final of the President Cup in Indonesia, where she defeated Hasanah Huswatun of Indonesia 5-0. It is also noteworthy that earlier another pugilist from Chakar Mandeep Kaur Sandhu had brought laurels to the village by becoming the Junior World Champion.

The Indian contingent which won Seven gold and Two silver medals included Four female pugilists.

Apart from Simranjit Kaur the other gold winners are Olympic bronze medalist MC Marykom, Jamuna Bero and Monica.
