New Delhi, Apr 19 (UNI) Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amrinder Singh and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphu Rio on Thursday called on Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh here and apprised him about the situation in the state.
During his meeting with the Home Minister, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh apprised him of the general law and order situation in the state, including issues relating to an attempt to create disturbance through targeted killing.
The Home Minister assured him of all possible central assistance.
Punjab CM also appreciated support being provided by the Centre. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is probing these killings, suspected to be carried out through a criminal conspiracy to disturb the communal harmony in the state.
During the meeting, Captain Singh stressed on the need for the formulation of an all-encompassing strategy to counter the emerging extremism and suggested strengthening of the Intelligence Apparatus, besides action against foreign handlers based in Canada, UK, USA, Italy, Germany, who are actively engaged in activities for revival of terrorism in Punjab.
Citing the state’s security concerns, he reiterated the demand for central assistance in the modernisation of the police forces under central scheme for ‘Strengthening of the State Special Branch’ for various Law and Order challenges being faced by the state, such as proxy war, trans-border terrorism and influx of drugs, weapons and explosives.
During the meeting Punjab CM also stressed that Punjab should be designated as a Category-A State for financial assistance at 90:10 Centre-State sharing basis on the pattern of Jammu and Kashmir and 8 North eastern states.
It is learnt that Union Home Minister has agreed to look in to the matter of police modernisation under MPF (Modernisation of Police Force)
During his meeting with the Home Minister, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphu Rio apprised him about the situation in the state and discussed the state Government’s requirements, including improving police infrastructure in the state.
Minister of States for Home Hansraj Ahir, Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba and senior ministry officials were present during the meeting.
