Punjab Govt should postpone Panchayat polls: Bir Devinder

Patiala, Dec 6 (UNI) Punjab government should not hold Panchayat Elections in the last week of December 2018 in view of the solemn observation of the Martyrdoms of the Char Sahibzadas (Four Sons) of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and Mata Gujri Ji, the former Deputy Speaker Punjab Vidhan Sabha Bir Davinder Singh said here on Thursday.
He said Sikh devotees visits Fatehgarh Sahib (Sirhind) and Chamkaur Sahib in District Ropar, to pay their obeisance to the great Martyrs.
He added that if, Panchayat Elections are conducted in this particular week, it would certainly contaminate the
entire atmosphere. The entire rural Punjab shall be in the grip of extreme tension because of procrastination, pulls and pressures applied by the diverse influences having allegiance to political parties.
The Chief Minister Punjab Capt Amarinder Singh and Rural Development and Panchayat Minister Mr Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa, both Sikhs themselves, should have thought through the significance of this period ‘Shaheedi Hafta’ in the revealing history of the Sikhs he added.
Mr Singh said i wonder how the Martyrdoms of the Char Sahibzadas (Four Sons) of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and Mata Gujri Ji slipped out of their mind while deciding the dates for the Panchayat elections in Punjab.
"I am afraid that this kind of vitiated environment in the State’s Panchayat elections would certainly destroy the sacrosactity of the sacred week." former speaker said.
"In the light of the above I would beseech the Government of Punjab to have some respect for the sentiments of the Sikh community and also look upon the magnificence of the supreme sacrifices made by two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh and hence postpone the Panchayat elections in Punjab, forthwith, he said.
