Punjab farmers call off dharna at Ludhiana

Moga, Feb 23 (UNI) Following Punjab and Haryana High Court decision establishing farmers right of peaceful protest and also assurance given by the state level banking committee to the High Court of returning back of blank cheques and no coercive steps against the farmers with regard to repayment of loans, seven farmer organisations have decided to call off protest dharna at Ludhiana.
Announcing this here on Saturday, BKU (Ugrahan) general secretary Sukhdev Singh Kokri told newsmen that the farmers outfits have decided to call off indefinite dharna which began at Ludhiana on February 18. The farmers organisations appealed to Punjab government to press the banking committee for the implementation of the assurance given by it to the High Court.Mr Kokri also said that the farmer outfits now decided to stage indefinite dharna at Patiala from March 25 in support of their demands and also against the anti-farmers policy of the state government. The main demands of the farmers included waiving of all kinds of farm loans, withdrawn of cases registered against the farmers and action against those officers who illegally registered cases against the farmers.
