Providential escape for 136 passengers, as Air India flight hits compound wall while take off

Tiruchirapalli, Oct 12 (UNI) Passengers and crew on board an Air India Express flight bound for Dubai from Tiruchirapalli had a 'miraculous' escape, after the aircraft hit an Instrument Landing System (ILS) antenna and smashed the compound wall while take off from Tiruchirapalli International Airport, early on Friday.

Airport Director K.Gunasekaran told newsmen that all the 129 passengers and seven crew members on board the Boeing 737-800 aircraft were safe and were deplaned, after the flight made an emergency landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai, this morning.

The flight took off at 0119 am and the incident came to light only after the CISF Personnel noticed the damaged ILS tower and the compound wall. The pilot and co-pilot of the aircraft were informed about the incident by the air traffic control room. On being alerted by the airport officials, the flight made an emergency landing at Mumbai at 05.39 am.

The damage caused to the aircraft was not known and the incident was informed to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) authorities, Mr Gunasekaran said.

However, the flight operations at the Airport were not affected though the ILS was hit and damaged in the incident.

Though the exact reason for the incident was not known immediately, it was learnt that the DGCA has ordered a probe into it.

Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister Vellamandi K.Natarajan visited the Airport and assessed situation.

He said while take off, the wheels of the flight might have hit the ILS and the compound wall of the Airport close to the Tiruchirapalli-Pudukottai highway.
