Prisoners in Bihar Jail devoid of legal, human rights

Patna, Nov 15 (UNI) Despite tall claims on jail reforms, a large number of prisoners lodged in different jails of Bihar were spending their lives in harrowing conditions as they were devoid of legal and human rights, said Justice V N Sinha, sitting judge of High Court here today.
Justice Sinha, also Chairman of Bihar Legal Services Authority, told mediapersons here that the authority inspected all the 58 prisons in 38 districts of Bihar, which exposed stark realities about the conditions of the prisoners.
"A Human Rights Activist Smita Chakraburtty, associated with Legal Services Authority, personally inspected all the 58 jails in Bihar and had interactions with 30,070 prisoners," Justice Sinha said, adding that the fact emerged from the inspection was surprising as 2,799 prisoners were devoid of any sort of legal assistance and their cases were not being presented in court by competent lawyers.
Justice Sinha said as per provisions of law, those lodged in jail who have no means to hire a competent lawyer
should be provided with one by the state.
Despite such legal provision, a large number of prisoners were not given the facilities of legal services by providing them the guidance of lawyers, he noted.
