Kolkata, Sep 12 (UNI) Prime accused Lalu Alam, accused of a murderous attempt on Mamata Banerjee, the then Congress Yuva neta in 1990, was today acquitted by a lower court after prosecution failed to prove any offence against the former CPI(M) leader.
The judge in the Alipur court dismissed the case acquitting the prime accused after prosecutors admitted that there were no more evidences to carry on the the criminal case since the remaining 11 accused persons either dead or not found.
Ms Banerjee, who was to appear as one of the witnesses in the case on August 21 last had pleaded with the court that since she could not come in the court and an arrangement be made for video conferencing. Since this facility was not there in the court and she was spared,
Lalu Alam had been charged with for leading a murderous attack on Mamata Banerjee on August 16 in 1990 at Hazra More in south Kolkata where she received hit on her forehead by a bamboo and was hospitalised.
Three decades after attempt to murder West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, court to begin hearing from February 6 in 2017.
CPi(M) youth wing leader Lalu Alam allegedly had hit Mamata Banerjee’s head with a stick during a rally at Hazra Crossing.
While cases were booked against 12 accused, all 11, except Lalu Alam, went absconding. Police completed the investigation and submitted the charge sheet at Alipore Court while issuing arrest warrants against the absconders.
The statement of Mamata Banerjee and the witnesses were recorded but the case progressed slowly with the court announcing a slew of dates for hearing.
