Prez, VP, PM congratulate Abhijit Banerjee on bagging Noble Prize for Economics

New Delhi, Oct 14 (UNI) President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Indian-origin economist and academic Abhijit Banerjee on winning the Nobel Economics Prize along with Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.”

In his congratulatory message, President Ram Nath Kovind said, “Congratulations to Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer on winning “the Nobel prize” in economic Science “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty”. Their research has helped economists better understand how to fight poverty in India & the world.”

“Extremely happy to note that eminent #economist Shri Abhijit Banerjee is among the 3 Nobel laureates awarded the prize for #economics this year,” Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said.

Congratulating Abhijeet banerjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said,“Congratulations to Abhijit Banerjee on being conferred the 2019 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. He has made notable contributions in the field of poverty alleviation.'

“I also congratulate Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer for winning the prestigious Nobel,” he added.

Born in Mumbai, the 58-year-old economist is currently the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the MIT.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party leader Rahul Gandhi also congratulated Banerjee.
In a statement, Ms Gandhi said,'Apart from making the Nation of his origin proud by this spectacular achievement, Prof Banerjee's and his fellow recipient's work in "experimental approach to alleviating global poverty", had helped millions across the globe- including India, come out of poverty. Their methodology, approach and experiments were exemplary and of extreme contemporary relevance. His recognition as a noble laureate has delighted every Indian.'

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Mr Gandhi said,'Congratulations to #AbhijitBanerjee on winning the Nobel Prize in Economics. Abhijit helped conceptualise NYAY that had the power to destroy poverty and boost the Indian economy. Instead we now have Modinomics, that’s destroying the economy and boosting poverty.'
The Congress said, 'Congratulations to Abhijit Banerjee for winning the #NobelPrize2019 His incredible work in poverty alleviation has made our country proud. The renowned economist was a key consultant for the path breaking NYAY programme presented by the Congress Party.'

Abhishek Singhvi, Congress national spokesperson said,'As a WB MP & an Indian, I am extremely proud—there is something in this land of Bengal...Nobel prize winners #Amartya Sen (Master of my College #Trinity, #Cambridge); #Tagore; now #AbhijitBanerjee. Something in this land, air, culture, heritage and genes!'
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said,'Winning the prestigious #NobelPrize in #Economics by an Indian American, #AbhijitBanerjee is a very proud moment for every Indian. For Congress Party, it is much more special as Banerjee was a key consultant for the significant NYAY program. Wish him all the best.'
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday congratulated Indian-American Abhijit Banerjee for winning the 2019 Nobel Economics Prize.

Mr Banerjee won the 2019 Nobel Prize for Economics jointly with Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer for their experimental approach to 'alleviating global poverty'

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Mr Kejriwal said,'Big day for every Indian. Heartiest congratulations to eminent economist Abhijit Banerjee for being among the winners of this year’s Nobel prize for Economics. Work on poverty alleviation gets highest endorsement.'

Abhijit’s mother Nirmala Banerjee said Abhijit is not only her son, he is son of the country (India).
Reacting to her son's achievement in the economy, Nirmala Banerjee, who was also a researcher on the same subject, said Abhijit is pride of the country.

She told a private TV channel from her Hindustan Park home in south Kolkata that often her telephone discussion with the son moves around on economy.

She said her son is expected in India this month for a book publication in New Delhi and come home.
