New Delhi, Nov 8 (UNI) President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated Mary Kom for winning gold at the Asian Boxing Championship at Ho Chi Minh City in Southern Vietnam.
"Congratulations Mary Kom, icon of Manipur and of India, for winning the gold medal at the Asian Boxing Championship. You make us prouder with every punch," President Kovind wrote on twitter.
"Congratulations Mary Kom for clinching the gold at the ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships. India is elated at your accomplishment," Modi tweeted.
Mary Kom bagged her fifth Asian Boxing Championship gold medal in the 48kg category edging out Korea's Kim Hyang Mi 5-0 on Wednesday.
The 34-year-old Mary Kom won four gold and one silver medal in this competition earlier. In the final, the Indian boxer completely outclassed her Korean opponent.
Mary dominated the Korean boxer in the entire match. This is the first Asian gold medal for an Indian boxer in the 48 kg category. This is Mary's sixth medal in the Asian Boxing Championship.
The Indian boxer had earlier won gold medals in this tournament in 2003, 2005, 2010 and 2012.
In 2008, she had to settle with silver medal.
