President gives assent on triple talaq ordinance

New Delhi, Sep 19 (UNI) President Ram Nath Kovind late on Wednesday night gave his assent to an ordinance cleared by Union Cabinet which makes instant triple talaq a criminal offence and can attract a maximum jail term of three years.
With the President assent, the Ordinance has come into force for six months. If the Union government wants to extend the ordinance beyond six months, it has to either get the bill approved by both the Houses of the Parliament or reintroduce the Ordinance, followed by President assent.
The triple-talaq bill, however passed in Lok Sabha, is still pending in the Rajya Sabha.
