Postal Department releases special cover in connection with 125th anniversay of Taluk Kacheri

Idukki, Dec 04 (UNI) The Department of Posts has released a special cover in connection with the 125th anniversary of Taluk Kacheri at Peerumade, which once housed the Munsif Court.
The taluk kacheri was the first British court in the erstwhile Travancore kingdom, set up by Sreemoolam Tirunal in 1893.
A large number of cases both civil and criminal were tried here when the magistrate enjoyed magisterial and executive powers during British rule.
It was here that Diwan Sankara Subbayyan had made the announcement making Sunday a holiday in 1894.
The area limit of the taluk kacheri under Changanassery Revenue district included present day Idukki and Kottayam districts and areas of Ernakulam district.
Though the Peerumade Munsif Court replaced the taluk kacheri, the building was kept intact. The furniture at the kacheri is still in use.
The facade of the building is decorated with a 'Sankhu' (conch), the royal insignia of Travancore Kingdom.
