Port connectivity, expansion projects to be part of PM Gatishakti, says Sonowal

New Delhi, Oct 16 (UNI) Port connectivity and expansion projects along with the inland waterways and coastal shipping projects will be part of the PM Gatishakti initiatives, Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said on Saturday.

The minister said that an integrated approach is being taken in development of ongoing and proposed infrastructure projects.

"This will result in multiple socio-economic benefits," Sonowal said.

In order to enhance coordination between several government departments and provide prior approval of required approvals for infrastructure projects, Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week launched Gatishakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity.

Sonowal said that Ministry of Port Shipping and Waterways is implementing multiple connectivity projects as part of its Sagarmala initiatives with 802 projects worth investment of Rs. 5.53 lakh crore.

Sharing details of various projects under execution, the minister said that 10 projects have been supported under Sagarmala for creation of coastal infrastructure at major and non-major ports.

"Five coastal berth projects worth Rs 321 crore have been completed at JNPT, ChPT, VPT, VoCPT and Kollam. Coastal berths at Navlakhi, Karwar, Old Mangaluru, Porbandar are currently under various stages of implementation," said Sonowal.

India’s merchandise imports in November 2021 was USD 53.15 billion, an increase of 57.18% over USD 33.81 billion in November 2020 and an increase of 37.96% over USD 38.52 billion in November 2019, as per data released by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry released on Wednesday.
