Pontiff of 16th century Dharmapuram Adheenam passes away in TN

Nagapattinam, Dec 4 (UNI) The 26th Pontiff of ‘Dharmapuram Adheenam,’ one of the ancient Saivite Mutts in India, Sri Shanmuga Desiga Gnanasambandha Paramacharya Swamigal (95) passed away in a private hospital at Thanjavur on Wednesday evening.
The pontiff was admitted to the hospital after his health condition deteriorated owing to old age. He breathed his last this evening. The body will be laid to rest on Thursday, Mutt sources said.
The adheenam, headquartered at Dharmapuram in Mayiladuthurai in the district, is more than 500 years old and has control over 27 Saivaite temples, runs several educational institutions and has other properties in various parts of the country.
