Polling underway in Dhemaji; EVM malfunctioning in many constituencies

Guwahati, Apr 09 (UNI) Polling is underway in Assam’s Dhemaji constituency where five candidates are in fray.
Reports of EVM malfunctioning has come from various places in the first hour of vote.
More than 2.19 lakh voters will exercise their franchise today.
The bypoll was necessitated in the constituency following the election of earlier BJP MLA Pradan Baruah as MP from Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat after Mr Sarbanada Sonowal vacated his parliamentary seat before taking the post of chief minister.
The polling began at 0700 hrs.
The counting will take place on April 13.
Fortune of five candidates will get sealed today in the EVMs, where the main contest is likely to take place between BJPs Ranoj Pegu and Congress Babul Sonowal.
The other three candidates are CPI(M)s Jadu Hazarika, SUCI(C)s Hem Kanta Miri and Independent Rajkumar Doley.
The elections are being held at 273 booths and authorities have earmarked 20 as very sensitive polling stations, while 141 are sensitive.
