Politics over Kairana exodus gains momentum in UP; BJP alleges Muslims too face exodus

Lucknow, Jun 14 (UNI) Politics over the exodus of people from Shamli district of western Uttar Pradesh refuses to die with today the BJP turisting the matter from communal issue to law and order situation and claiming that Muslims too have left Kairana and Kandhla towns due to criminal acts against them. BJP MP from Kairana Hukum Singh, who had recently raised the matter of exodus of 346 Hindu families from Kairana during the past couple of years, held a press conference in the nearby Kandhla town alleging that 63 families have left this town too. The MP also released the list of 63 families which also included some names of Muslims. "The matter is not communal but it showcases the deteriorating law and order situation of UP," Mr Singh said. Meanwhile, a high-level nine-member BJP team, announced by the party president Amit Shah yesterday during the party's national executive in Allahabad, will go to Kairana and Kandhla tomorrow. BJP spokesperson Vijay Bahadur Pathak said here today that team would be led by party's legislature party leader Suresh Khanna while the other members are party's chief whip in the assembly Dr Radha Mohan Das Agarwal, BJP MPs Satypal Singh, Raghav Lakhanpal, Dr Bhola Singh, Satish Gautam, Dharamendra Kashyap and former UP DGP Brijlal. In Lucknow Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati too lambasted both the BJP and the SP for the Kairana issue and alleged that these parties are raising the matter just to divide the community before the assembly polls. She, however, thanked the media for countering its charges of the BJP and bringing out the real situation in the area. The issue came in the front stage after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah raised the issue of law and order in the state and mentioned about the exodus of Hindus from Kairana repeatedly during their speeches in the BJP's national executive which concluded in Allahabad yesterday. A couple of days ago, NHRC had sent notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on "exodus of 250 Hindu families" from Kairana due to "fear of criminals" belonging to another community, in the communally-sensitive Shamli district adjoining Muzaffarnagar. UP BJP president Keshav Prasad Maurya told UNI here today that the national executive had expressed its concern on the law and order situation in UP and the issue would be in the focus for the BJP in run for the 2017 assembly polls. Mr Maurya said the 'jungle raj' prevailed in the state and the present Samajwadi Party government has lost control over the administration with criminals and goons taking over the reign. On the other hand, former beauracrat and ex-district magistrate of Muzaffarnagar (with including Shamli) Surya Pratap Singh, in his Facebook Account supported the views of the BJP MP and claimed that law and order is out of control in Kairana and Kandhla. "There are couple of localities in Kairana and Kandhla where police cannot enter anytime in the day and all illegal activities are done under the leadership of a political leader of a community, receiving patronage from the ruling party," Mr Singh, who retired as a senior IAS officer in UP on December last, wrote. He added that there is an urgent need to flush out these criminal elements and a strong political will power is required to do so. Earlier, Superintendent of Police (SP) Shamli Vijay Bhushan denied the charges of the BJP and claimed that there was no such exodus as claimed by BJP MP Hukum Singh, who claimed that 250 families have left the area in fear of the criminals of other community. The Shamli district administration and police, however, carried out a "door-to-door" investigation in the Kairana town on Sunday and found that most families left the small town over a span of 15 years and not during the past two years as claimed by the BJP. Mr Bhushan said police visited and inquired into the whereabouts of 150 families out of 346 listed by the MP. Of these, four have no living member, 13 families are still living in Kairana while 68 families actually left the area but most over 15 years ,between 1998 and 2011. The remaining families also left the area but over more than five years, not in the last two-three years, as claimed by the MP, the SP said. "Of the families in the list, we surveyed 150. While 68 families did indeed leave Kairana, many of them left as early as 1998 and 65 families left five years ago. Since these people left Kairana over a period spanning more than a decade, it would be inaccurate to say that this was an exodus," he said. The SP claimed that these families left not for fear of another community or crime but purely due to socio-economic reasons. "Most left because Kairana did not have good schools or hospitals. Some left to expand businesses. We will get a clearer picture once the entire probe has been completed," he said. UNI MB SW SB NS1814
