Agartala, May 20 (UNI) Police have launched an investigation into the allegation of rape with the promise of marriage by tribal girl against ruling IPFT MLA from Rimavalley constituency of Dhalai district Dhananjoy Tripura.
However, the MLA denied the allegations and stated it as political conspiracy to malign him.
Superintendent of Police (SP) West Tripura Ajit Pratap Singh said, “We have registered the case and have started investigation into allegations. The medical test of the complainant has been done and all angles are being explored to reveal the truth. So far there is no arrest or detention in the case.”
According to report, the girl yesterday lodged a complaint against the MLA with Mandai police station of West Tripura stating that she had been criminally assaulted several times since 2014 by Dhananjoy promising to marry her and the date of wedding was fixed several times but marriage was never solemnized, as the accused had repeatedly changed the date under various pleas.
“We met first time in 2010 when I was a school student and he was studying in college at Jirania. A year later, an affair developed between us and I had been taken to his rented house at Abhoynagar in Agartala and his village several times promising to marry me. During the visits, I was raped but never thought he will deny our relations,” the victim told the police.
She further stated that the matter was also informed to IPFT supremo and Revenue Minister of the state N C Debbarma and there were several reconciliation meetings between both the parties. The marriage date was fixed in March 2017 and accordingly the ring ceremony was also solemnized by the girl’s family but the marriage ceremony was not done because of his engagement in the assembly election process.
“After he won the election, he stopped all communications with me. In December last year, in presence of IPFT chief it was decided that the marriage ceremony will be solemnized in April this year. Accordingly, legal formalities had been started and papers were prepared. The date was supposed to be fixed on April 25 at my aunt’s house but they did not turn up. When our family enquired into their absence, his elder brother demanded cash of Rs 8 lakh and when we refused to pay, Dhananjoy denied marrying me,” she alleged.
“Finding on option, we went to N C Debbarma again but he also could not convince Dhananjoy's family and suggested us to look for alternative. We later decided to lodge complaint with police. Dhananjoy is charged with rape promising to marry the girl, cheating and breach of trust,” the victim’s mother told media.
Meanwhile, Dhananjoy held a press conference at Gandacherra last evening claiming him as innocent and stated, "It is a shameful plot to defame me, my party and the government. I have never been familiar with any such lady in any relation. And I am confident, if the law enforcing agencies look into the matter the truth will reveal. The opposition political parties and some anti-social groups have made up the plot. If required, I shall move the upper court.”
