PM to inaugurate solar panels at UN building in honour of Mahatma Gandhi

New York, Sep 23 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate on Tuesday solar panels on the roof of the UN building as a mark of tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
Besides the Gandhi Solar Park, a Gandhi Peace Garden at the State University of New York Campus at Old Westbury where a 150 trees have been planted in honour of Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary, will also be inaugurated.
There will be also release of a UN postage stamp on Gandhiji, officials said.
The events will be organised to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in the UN.
The theme of the event is ‘Leadership Matters – Relevance of Gandhi in Contemporary Times’ and the Prime Minister will be joined by some Heads of State and Government who will also express in their own words the relevance of Gandhi in contemporary times.
President of Korea Moon Jae-in, Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien loong, Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness as well as the UN Secretary General Antonio Gutteres will also address.
Speaking at the UN Summit on Climate Change at the UN headquarters on Monday, the Prime Minister
said that as a token gesture, India is also getting the UN greener by installing rooftop solar panels at a cost of USD 1 million.
"I am happy to announce that tomorrow we are going to inaugurate solar panels on the roof of the UN building, funded by India at a cost of 1 million dollars," he said.
"The time for talking is over; the world needs to act now," Mr Modi emphasised.
The Prime Minister also said India would be looking at a renewable energy target in excess of 400 GW by 2030, implement programmes to boost electric mobility, increase the proportion of the biofuel blending in petrol and diesel and focus on the use of Compressed bio gas.
Prime Minister Modi also talked about the success of the clean cooking gas initiative which positively impacted the lives 150 million families, particularly women and children.
The Prime Minister also launched Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure to assist countries with making their infrastructure disaster resilient. He invited all member states to join the coalition.
Under the "Industry Transition Track', that India and Sweden co-lead with other partners as part of the Climate Action Summit, Mr Modi announced the launch of the "Leadership Group”, which will provide a platform for governments and the private sector with opportunities for cooperation in the area of technology innovation and develop low carbon pathways for industry.
He also said that India has called for a people’s movement to end the use of single use plastic. He hoped that India’s efforts will help create an awareness at a global level about the harmful effects of single use plastic.
