PM should tell Davos why 1pc of India's population holds 73pc of its wealth: Rahul

New Delhi, Jan 23 (UNI) Taking a potshot at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his address at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the Prime Minister should tell Davos why one per cent of India's population holds 73 per cent of India's wealth.
Quoting an Oxfam survey which said that the richest one per cent cornered 73 per cent of wealth generated in India in 2017, Mr Gandhi in a social media post, said, 'Dear PM, Welcome to Switzerland! Please tell DAVOS why 1 per cent of India’s population gets 73 per cent of its wealth? I’m attaching a report for your ready reference.'
The attack by Mr Gandhi came at a time when Mr Modi is in Davos in Switzerland where he delivered his plenary address this afternoon.
The Oxfam report said top 1 per cent of earners captured less than 21 per cent of total income in the late 1930s, before dropping to 6 per cent in the early 1980s and rising to 22 per cent in 2014.
The report, which was released hours before the annual Davos World Economic Forum (WEF) meet began, further stated that 67 crore Indians, comprising the population’s poorest half, saw their wealth rise by just 1 per cent in 2017.
