PM rally: Tourists not allowed at Ridge,  SPG keeping strict vigil
Shimla, Apr 25 (UNI) This tourist resort which registers footfall in lakhs every day during summer season, drew a blank on the historic Ridge ground here owing to preparations being made for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally here. SPG and local police were keeping a strict vigil on the Ridge ground and turned the town into a fortress. The Ridge ground was cordoned by the organisers since early this morning as it was covered with barricades and chairs, leaving no vacant space for tourists. The Town is full to its capacity as tourists were making a beeline here to enjoy pleasant weather of Shimla but they had to remain confined to their hotels and Mall Road. The Prime Minister will address the BJP 'Shankh Nad' Rally here on April 27 as the state goes to assembly polls in the year end. SPG and Police forces have occupied every inch of space on ground and even the Mall road is highly choked. Daily commuters have to face the hardship as their movement is restricted and traffic is likely to remain highly congested or oneway. Security personnel were physically checking each nook and corner at every entry and exit point of the town. The Prime Minister likely to be enter in the heart of town at AG office after landing at Shimla airport where he is scheduled to unveil the Uddan Scheme at Jubberhati outskirts of capital town. Mr Modi is scheduled to land at Annadale helipad in a Air force Helicopter and cavalcades of SPG will bring him in the town. He will address a public meeting from the Ridge view rain shelter at Taka bench. Shimla Deputy Commissioner Rohan Chand Thakur and SP D W Negi are personally visiting the Ridge to access the seating plan in the venue along with SPG officers. A number of Himachal Pradesh Police Jawan, Commandos, CIDs, Jawan in civvies are keeping a strict vigil. A helicopter is also making sorties to access the arrangement and taking stock of security preparedness here. There are reports that SPG officers were pressing the local DC and SP to issue certificate of safety of ground as it was situated on a water mansion tank however both reportedly declined. DC Shimla and SP reportedly visited by the SPG officer in their office to access the apprehension of any mishap to make the all necessary arrangement to avoid any eventuality. Deputy Mayor of Shimla Municipal Corporation, Tekinder Singh Panwer said that SPG jawan visited his office to discuss about the safety issue of venue. " I have already alerted the PM after writing a letter to him about the vulnerability of the venue however the BJP state unit had shown keenness to hold a rally at this venue, BJP legislator Suresh Bhardwaj also pressed to host this rally at the Ridge however they could not certify its safety," Mr Panwer told UNI. No heavy vehicle and events are normally allowed at the Ridge, the High Court of Himachal Pradesh has taken the cognisance of matter. BJP and Congress leaders have addressed political rallies here in the past however the Summer festival was being organised by the District Commissioner at the opposite end of this venue. Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda also visited the Ridge Ground this evening to access the preparation for the PM rally along with local leaders. Local BJP unit did not utter a single word about the safety of venue however it remained busy organising sanitation program in the town as leader of Opposition Prem Kumar Dhumal attended a Saphi Abhiyan at Sabji Mandi ground this noon. BJP has been organised similar cleanness programme . This would be first visit of the Prime Minister after taking over the office as he had remained the state party in-charge earlier and visited most parts of state. UNI ML RSA SHK 1915
