PM Modi congratulates Canadian PM Trudeau on election victory,

New Delhi, Sep 22 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on his election victory and said he looks forward to continue working with him to further boost India-Canada relations.

“Congratulations Prime Minister @JustinTrudeau on your victory in the elections! I look forward to continue working with you to further strengthen India-Canada relations, as well as our cooperation on global and multilateral issues,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s ruling Liberal Party clung to power though it ended up 14 seats short of the 170-mark in the 338-member House of Commons in the snap elections called on Monday.

The Jagmeet Singh-led New Democratic Party (NDP) will again hold the balance of power as it increased its tally from 24 to 27, with 17 Indo-Canadians, most of them from PunJab, elected as MPs.

The main opposition Conservative Party ended up with a tally of 122 seats – one up from the dissolved House.

Among the 17 Indo-Canadian winners are Jagmeet Singh, former Minister Tim Uppal and three current Cabinet Ministers Harjit Singh Sajjan, Bardish Chagger and Anita Anand.

Defence Minister Harjit Singh Sajjan again won from Vancouver South by beating Sukhbir Gill of the Conservative Party.
