New Delhi, Apr 21 (UNI) Greeting all civil servants who were serving the nation with utmost diligence in all parts of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised country's first Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for his outstanding role in the making of country's present day civil service.

'Today, on Civil Services Day, my greetings to all civil servants who are serving the nation with utmost diligence in all parts of India. Their hard work enhances our nation’s development trajectory,' Mr Modi said on Twitter.

The Prime Minister also paid tributes to the great Sardar Patel whose outstanding role in the 'making of our present day civil service ensured our nation has a strong administrative framework that empowers millions of lives through policy interventions and methodical implementation'.

April 21 is celebrated every year as ‘Civil Services day’ which is as an occasion for the civil servants to rededicate themselves to the cause of citizen and renew their commitments to public service and excellence in work.

The date is chosen to commemorate the day when first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel addressed the probationers of Administrative Services Officers in 1947 at Metcalf House, Delhi.

He referred to civil servants as the ‘steel frame of India’. The first such function was held in Vigyan Bhawan here on April 21, 2006.
