New Delhi, Dec 6 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed deep grief over the passing away of noted economist and former union minister professor Yoginder K Alagh.
In a tweet, the Prime Minister said: "Professor YK Alagh was a distinguished scholar who was passionate about various aspects of public policy, particularly rural development, the environment and economics. Pained by his demise. I will cherish our interactions. My thoughts are with his family and friends. Om Shanti."
Earlier his son Professor Munish Alagh confirmed the demise of his illustrious father, who was also an emeritus professor at Ahmedabad-based Sardar Patel Institute of Economic and Social Research (SPIESR).
Alagh died of medical complications after suffering an injury in his femur during his morning walks.
Alagh was born in the present-day Pakistan's Chakwal in 1939 and studied at Rajasthan University and later got a doctorate degree in economics from the Pennsylvania University.
He taught economics at prestigious Indian and foreign universities, including IIM-Calcutta, and also functioned as the vice-chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi.
Alagh served as central minister for power, planning minister and member of the Planning Commission.
