People witness Rare Annular Solar Eclipse

Hyderabad, Dec 26 (UNI) A rare once in a decade celestial event of ' Annular Solar Eclipse' was witnessed by people across the country on Thursday.

Though “Annularity Phase” was seen in few parts of Southern India, the rest of India was observed it as “Partial Solar Eclipse” due to their distance from central path of the Eclipse.

Planetary Society, India Director and Founder Secretary N Sri Raghunandan Kumar told here UNI that a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth such away that the Sun is wholly or partially obscured.

This can only happen during a new moon, when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from the Earth.

An annular eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon are exactly in line, but the apparent size of the Moon is smaller than that of the Sun. Hence the Sun appears as a very bright ring, or annulus, surrounding the outline of the Moon, Mr Kumar said.

He said across the world this Eclipse is visible in the region covering Middle East, North Eastern Africa, Asia except North & Eastern Russia, North and Western Australia and Solomon Island.

Planetary Society,India in association with Hyderabad Book Fair conducted “Observation of Annular Solar Eclipse” from 8.08 a.m. to 11.10 a.m. at Telangana Kalabharati (N.T.R. Stadium ) near Indira Park here.

Prof. Dr. G. Ramdass Retd. Head Of Department, Department of Geophysics, Osmania University,

Dr. Vijaybhasakar Orthopaedician, Director Center for Space Medicine and Mr Kumar were present and shared their expertise to create awareness among large number of children and general public who assembled at the venue.

Special Certified Eclipse Goggles were provided to the people at the venue for witnessing the Solar Eclipse.
