People's participation must to curb pollution : Javadekar

New Delhi, Nov 21 (UNI) Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar on Thursday said there is a need for continuous efforts from all stakeholders to curb the menace of increasing pollution in the country and added that peoples' participation is must.
Replying to a calling attention on rising pollution in the country, particularly in Delhi, in the Rajya Sabha, Mr Javadekar said that although it is the responsibility of the government to take measures but without the participation of the common man the problem of rising pollution will not be resolved.
"There is a need for a 'Jan Aandolan'," he said and added 'we must encourage afforestation'.
Mr Javadekar says the Jan Andolan should also include the pollution caused by traffic, both noise and air.
He said that individuals have to fight the menace together by taking some basic steps such as using environment friendly fuel and avoiding honking unnecessarily as part of conscious effort.
Talking about higher levels of pollution in cities, Mr Javadekar proposed creation of urban forests, which will serve as the lungs of the cities. He cited example of Urban Forestry programme in Pune.
