New Delhi, Jul 5 (UNI) A penumbral lunar eclipse was observed in many countries around the world on Sunday, except India.
This was the third lunar eclipse of the year 2020.
As per Hindu calendar year, the full moon of the Ashadha month aka July as per Gregorian calendar is observed as the Guru Purnima.
Though not visible in India, the celestial phenomenon was visible in Latin America, Mexico, Cuba, the Caribbean islands, USA, Canada in North America, most of the African countries along with Western European countries like UK, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany and Italy.
A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and the Moon are imperfectly aligned. When this happens, the Earth blocks some of the Sun's light from directly reaching the Moon's surface and covers all or part of the Moon with the outer part of its shadow, also known as the penumbra.
