PCI expels Ali Javed; he says Geelani did not share event agenda with him

New Delhi, Feb 12 (UNI) Taking strong exception to the commemoration of Afzal Guru’s death anniversary in its premises, Press Club of India (PCI) today expelled Ali Javed from the club for organising the event, in which ''anti-India'' and ''pro-Pakistan'' slogans were raised. In a statement here, the PCI said the decision to strip Ali Javed, a writer and journalist, of its membership was taken after he failed to file a satisfactory reply to the showcause notice issued to him to explain about the event. To ensure that no such incidents recur in future, the club has also decided to constitute a three-member committee, headed by its vice-President Sri Krishna, to draft new norms for providing the club hall on hire to members. Asserting that Club was not involved in the celebration of death anniversary of Parliament Attack Convict Afzal Guru, the PCI said it forcibly vacated the premises as soon the anti-national happenings were brought to its notice. On the other hand, Ali Javed, in his explanation to PCI about the incident, stressed that he not just opposed ''anti-India'' slogans raised during event but also contested the ‘divisive ideology’ of people present at the seminar. Ali Javed said he booked the PCI hall after his friend Professor SR Geelani asked him to do so for a seminar on Kashmir issue on February 10. '' But when event started, Kashmiri students present there turned into a platform to pay tributes to Maqbool Bhatt and Afzal Guru,'' Javed said, adding that later, those students started raising slogans, hailing the duo as martyrs and placed banners in similar tones. The writer said he was spared with two options—either to boycott the function or to stay and oppose it and added that he chose to oppose it and contended that Maqbool Bhatt and Afzal Guru were not innocent or martyrs. '' However, Kashmiri students kept raising slogans, following which other speakers such as Professor Vijay Singh and Tripti Singh asked them to refrain from it but they remained unfazed. Later, PCI members came and evicted all of us,'' Javed said. Accusing Geelani, who was acquitted in Parliament Attack case due to lack of evidence, of deceiving him, Javed said he did not share the real agenda behind the seminar with him. Javed said he has always been a sharp critic of Kashmiri terrorism, communal politics and of divisive ideologies, adding that from now onwards he will never help or associate with anti-national elements in any sort.
