Paris Olympics: India clinch bronze, Harmanpreet's brace, Sreejesh's heroics seal victory

Paris, Aug 8 (UNI) In a dramatic finale to the Paris 2024 Olympics men’s hockey tournament, India clinched the bronze medal with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Spain on Thursday.
The match, played at the historic Yves-du-Manoir Stadium, was a testament to India’s resilience and skill, as they mirrored their podium finish from Tokyo 2020 and added a fourth bronze to their Olympic hockey legacy.
The victory marked a historic achievement for India, as they became the first team since Munich 1972 to secure back-to-back Olympic medals. It also served as a fitting farewell to PR Sreejesh, the veteran goalkeeper whose heroic saves played a crucial role in sealing the win.
With this bronze medal, Sreejesh concluded his illustrious international career on a high note, adding one final accolade to his storied tenure.
The match was also notable for the return of Amit Rohidas, who had been suspended for the semi-final against Germany due to a red card. His return was pivotal in bolstering India’s defensive line, as he played a key role in thwarting Spain's attacks.
The first quarter saw both teams struggle to break the deadlock, with neither side able to create clear scoring opportunities. Despite India's slight edge in possession and attacking circle penetrations, the score remained 0-0.
The intensity ramped up in the second quarter when Spain’s Marc Miralles converted a penalty stroke, giving the Redsticks a 1-0 lead. However, India’s captain, Harmanpreet Singh, turned the tide just before halftime with a crucial penalty corner goal, leveling the score at 1-1.
The third quarter was a showcase of Harmanpreet’s exceptional talent. He netted another penalty corner, bringing his tournament tally to 10 goals and giving India a 2-1 lead. Despite relentless pressure from Spain, India’s defense, anchored by the steadfast Sreejesh, held strong.
As the final whistle blew, it confirmed India’s bronze medal, cementing Harmanpreet Singh’s role as a pivotal leader and scorer. The result added a triumphant chapter to India’s rich Olympic hockey history and highlighted the team's enduring spirit and skill.
