Par Panel recommends Centre to include Chandni Chowk in Delhi as HRIDAY city

New Delhi, May 29 (UNI) A Parliamentary Panel has recommended the Ministry of Urban Development to include Chandni Chowk and some other areas in Delhi as the National Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) city in the next phase. The Standing Committee on Urban Development in its latest report said it was surprised to note that Delhi, the Capital of India, which has impressive cultural and heritage value besides being marked of glorious historic significance has not been included under HRIDAY Scheme. The panel noted that the Ministry of Urban Development has launched the National Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) scheme on January 21 last year, with a focus on holistic development of heritage cities with the aim to preserve and revitalise soul of the heritage city to reflect the city’s unique character by encouraging aesthetically appealing, accessible, informative and secured environment. Over a duration of 27 months and a total outlay of Rs 500 Crore, the Scheme is being implemented in 12 identified Cities namely, Ajmer, Amaravati, Amritsar, Badami, Dwarka, Gaya, Kanchipuram, Mathura, Puri, Varanasi, Velankanni and Warangal. The scheme is implemented in a mission mode. The Committee appreciated that this Scheme supports development of core heritage infrastructure projects which will include revitalisation of urban infrastructure for areas around heritage identified sites. The Scheme supports development of core heritage infrastructure projects which will include revitalisation of urban infrastructure for areas around heritage assets identified / approved by the Ministry of Culture, and State Governments. These initiatives will include development of water supply, sanitation, drainage, waste management, approach roads, footpaths, street lights, tourist conveniences, electricity wiring, landscaping and such citizen services. The main objective of HRIDAY is to preserve character of the soul of heritage city and facilitate inclusive heritage linked urban development by exploring various avenues including involving private sector. Rs 500 crore would be provided to the 12 cities selected in the first phase under the ‘Central Scheme’ of HRIDY and the central government will meet the entire expenditure under the scheme.
