Pakistan government gets flak from PPP for FATF verdict

Pakistan government gets flak from PPP for FATF verdict

Islamabad, Oct 25 (UNI) While the Pakistan government has claimed the Financial Action Task Force (FATF)'s decision to keep the country in the grey list as a diplomatic victory, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has sought an explanation from it over the outcome.
PPP leader in the Senate Sherry Rehman in a statement on Saturday alleged that the 'disappointing' outcome at the FATF was due to the failure of the government to prepare a strong enough case for taking the South Asian Nation out of the grey list. “Why did they (the government functionaries) not get their homework done on time? The news from FATF insiders is that the law drafting is slipshod and obviously done in. Why did they not look at everything in good time? They were too busy managing a constant anti-opposition narrative which seems to be their only task,” asked Rehman in the statement.
Dawn quoted Rahman accusing the Imran Khan led government of using the FATF requirements to target opposition parties. She said that the real FATF requirements were ignored and a "half hearted exercise" was used "as an excuse to pass draconian laws to target the opposition. "
The FATF had decided on October 23 (Friday) that Pakistan would continue to remain on its grey list for another four months that is still February 2021 when the organisation would conduct a review. Pakistan has failed to meet 6 out of its 27 promised action plans to curb money laundering and checking terror financing activities.
