Over 44 staff in Supreme Court test Covid +ve, all judges to switch to virtual courts

New Delhi, Apr 12 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday decided that all judges will hold sittings via video conferencing from home after over 44 staffers in the top court of the country tested positive for the COVID-19.
While some media reports suggested that around 50 per cent of SC staffers have tested positive for coronavirus, an apex court official said only 44 employees got infected in the last week.
There are nearly 3,400 staffers working in the apex court.
In view of the development, all the benches which were scheduled to sit at 1030 hrs sat at 1130 hrs, while those scheduled to sit at 1100 hrs deferred it to 1200 hrs today.
Sanitisation work has been intensified in courtrooms and the proceedings will begin an hour late than their scheduled time.
While some judges had been coming to the Court premises to conduct hearings, few others have been presiding over proceedings from their residences till now.
India on Monday registered 1,68,912 new COVID-19 cases and 904 fatalities in the last 24 hours, the 6th highest single-day rise in seven days.
