Oscar 2026 shortlists revealed: ‘Sinners' and 'Wicked’ lead contenders

Los Angeles, Dec 17 (UNI) The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the shortlists across 12 key categories, highlighting the top contenders ahead of the Oscar nominations next month.
Among the frontrunners is Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners,’ which earned recognition in multiple categories including makeup, cinematography, casting, hairstyling, sound, visual effects, and two spots in original song, according to Variety.
Musical fantasy ‘Wicked: For Good’ also made the shortlist in cinematography, makeup and hairstyling, casting, original score, sound, visual effects, and two original songs by Stephen Schwartz. Meanwhile, Netflix’s ‘Frankenstein’ secured mentions in casting, cinematography, makeup and hairstyling, original score, sound, and visual effects.
The 12 shortlisted categories are: Animated Short Film, Casting, Cinematography, Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Live Action Short Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Sound, and Visual Effects.
In the International Feature Film category, a total of 15 films have advanced to the next round of voting for the 98th Academy Awards.
For Visual Effects, the shortlisted titles include ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, ‘FI’, ‘Frankenstein’, ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’, ‘Sinners’, ‘Superman’, and ‘Wicked: For Good’.
The official Oscar nominations will be announced on January 22, 2026, while the 98th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre, Ovation Hollywood, where awards across 24 categories will be presented.
