Organic Agriculture University to be set up in Goa

Panaji, Nov 13 (UNI) Goa Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant 'Babu' Kavlekar has said that an organic Agriculture University is being planned to be set up in the state.
In a statement, Mr Kavlekar, who also holds agriculture portfolio, said, “Although Goa is seen as a tourist state, I am keen to tap on the majority of Goa’s inland which has predominantly agricultural base and develop it as a model of advanced Organic Agricultural practices. This will boost Goa’s rural economy that is already suffering due to mining closure in the state. Also,
this new initiate will help the young generation of Goa to pursue agriculture as a career defining industry.''
Setting up of Organic Agricultural University will help locals to study techniques of productivity increase, quality control and research and development in the field of Organic Farming and it would also boost allied industries like processing and packaging, he said.
''Currently we have identified some areas required for this project and short listing will begin shortly along with other legal procedures. I would expect my Farming fraternity to come forward and help us in pursuing the dream of leaving Goa’s footprints on agricultural map of India,” he said.
According to the statement, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has principally agreed on the project.
Mr Kavlekar had recently visited Pune Agriculture College that is affiliated to Pune University and also Rahuri Agriculture University. Dr Madangpal Varshaneya, Director, Institute Of Rural Development And Education (IRDE), and Ex Vice Chancellor of Anand University Gujrat and Kamdhenu University) who helped to setup Anand University in Gujrat when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was Chief Minister of Gujarat, has been appointed as chief strategist for the project. Dr Varshaneya was also Dean of Rahuri University and has over 35 years of Agricultural Exposure.
