Opposition stages walkout over nepotism charges against ex-minister

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 17 (UNI) Opposition Congress-led UDF today staged a walkout in Kerala Assembly in protest against the denial of an adjournment motion seeking discussion over nepotism charges against former Industry Minister EP Jayarajan, who had resigned over the allegations.
Seeking the leave of the House to move the adjournment motion in this regard, VD Satheesan of Congress alleged that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was fully aware of corruption and Jayarajan was forced to resign to save the face of the LDF Government.
He also demanded the inclusion of Chief Minister's office in the Vigilance inquiry in connection with nepotism charges against Jayarajan, who was the number two in the Cabinet.
Mr Vijayan said he was not aware of the appointment of Sudheer Nambiar, who is also the relative of Jayarajan, as the head of the Kerala State Industrial Enterprises.
However, V D Satheesan said it is hard to believe that the Chief Minister was not aware of the appointments. His argument is against logic, he said.
Meanwhile, Jayarajan said appointments were made in the industries department as per norms and from the panel of Restructuring and Internal Audit Board (RIAB).
He said he was trying to study about the messy industries and taking steps to improve the functioning of public sector organizations. Jayarajan also criticised the media for giving unnecessary coverage for all the episodes.
Following the reply by the former Minister, Speaker Sreeramakrishnan denied permission to move the adjournment motion.
In protest against the Government stand, the Opposition staged a walkout.
