Opposition stages walkout over corruption in import of cashew nuts from Africa

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 20 (UNI) Opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front members on Thursday staged a walkout from Kerala Assembly in protest against denial of an adjournment motion on alleged corruption in the import of raw cashew nuts from African countries.
Seeking the leave of the House to move the adjournment motion in this regard, Congress member Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said norms were flouted to import the raw cashew from African nations like Guinea-Bissau and Burkino Faso.
The advertisements for importing cashew were given only in the local newspapers of African nations to help middlemen, he added.
But, the raw nuts were supplied by a Sahadevan Pillai from Thazhava, a former BJP candidate from Mavelikkara Lok Sabha seat, he said.
In her reply, Fisheries Minister Mercykutty Amma said the Cashew Board had signed the agreement with foreign suppliers, who only appointed an authorised agent of their own choice.
Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said middlemen were given the role in the import proving that the Government failed to avoid middlemen from the deal.
Later, demanding a vigilance probe into the import deal, the Opposition members staged the walkout from the Assembly.
