Opium seized from motorcycle in Himachal's Nurpur, one held

Dharamshala, July 11 (UNI) Police in Himachal Pradesh's Nurpur district have arrested a 31-year-old man and seized 428 grams of opium during a crackdown on drug trafficking. The contraband was recovered from a motorcycle by a team from the Thakurdwara Police Post under Indora Police Station during a raid conducted on the basis of specific intelligence.
Nurpur district Superintendent of Police Ilma Afroz told UNI that the team was on routine patrol and conducting anti-narcotics surveillance at Malkana Chowk on July 9 when it received credible information that Sumit Thakur, a resident of Malkana village, was allegedly involved in the sale of opium and was carrying the contraband on his motorcycle (HP97B-3331).
SP Ilma said that acting on the tip-off, the police raided the Water Supply premises at Mand Ghandran village. During a search conducted in the presence of two independent witnesses, 428 grams of opium was recovered from the motorcycle's fuse box. The contraband and the motorcycle were seized on the spot.
She said that a case has been registered at Indora Police Station under Section 15 of the NDPS Act.
Ilma Afroz said that the accused has been identified as Sumit Thakur (31), son of Narendra Singh, a resident of Malkana village in Indora tehsil of Kangra district.
She said that the investigations are underway to ascertain the source of the seized opium and whether the accused has links with any organised drug trafficking network. She said that strict legal action would be taken against any other persons found involved in the case.
