One year of troubles and turmoils for AIADMK, more challenges ahead

Chennai, May 23 (UNI) The ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, which has split into two groups, has completed a tumultuous one year in office, that saw the party losing its charismatic leader late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, virtually putting the party at the cross roads and an uncertain future, with a full four year term left to be completed. It was this day last year, Party Supremo Ms Jayalalithaa assumed office as Chief Minister amid cheerful atmosphere, before her untimely death in December plunged the State in grief. She bucked the political trend, threw the pre-poll predictions haywire and single-handedly swept the AIADMK to a record second successive term and emulated her political mentor and Party Founder MGR who won three back to back assembly elections in 1977, 1980 and 1984. On her first day in office, Ms Jayalalithaa signed five files fulfilling five important poll promises, that included closing down of 500 state-owned TASMAC liquor shops as part of introducing total prohibition in a phased manner, and waiver of farm loans availed in cooperative institutions. The government led by her chugged on nicely before Jayalalithaa, after launching the second phase of Chennai Metro Rail project on September 21 last year, fell ill the next day. After 75 days in hospitalisation she was finally declared dead on the night of December five due to a massive cardiac arrest. In the intervening period, her trusted lieutenant O Panneerselvam was given all the portfolios handled by her, before he was made CM again and was sworn in within two hours of her death, amid poignant scenes at the Raj Bhavan.
