Belgrade, Oct 15 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday highlighted India’s perspective on development and economy during the 141st Assembly of Inter Parliamentary Union being held in Belgrade, Serbia
An Indian Parliamentary Delegation led by Mr Birla is presently attending the 141st Assembly of Inter Parliamentary Union being held in Belgrade, Serbia.
During the day, Mr Birla participated in the ‘Speaker’s Dialogue on Governance’, a high level IPU platform to exchange political ideas.
He delivered a statement at the break-out Session of the Speakers’ Dialogue on Development and Economy.
Highlighting India’s growth story and its achievements with respect to various crucial economic indicators, Mr Birla effectively underlined Indian perspective on the issues of Development and Economy.
Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor was also invited to be a panelist on the second break-out Session of the Speaker’s Dialogue on Security. After the Round table, an Outcome Document was prepared to transmit the same for the consideration of the Assembly.
The proceedings of the Assembly commenced with the debate of the participating countries on the emergency item on Climate Change which was proposed by India.
A number of countries namely, Uganda, Bhutan, Fiji, Chile, Bangladesh, Brazil etc. participated in the debate and applauded India’s initiative to bring a resolution on Climate Change as an emergency item.
Concluding the debate, Dr Shashi Tharoor highlighted the urgent need and rationale for India’s proposal on climate change.
Urging the developed countries to take a demonstrable lead in combating climate change, he called for collective global action to face the challenge of Climate Change.
On the sidelines of the Assembly, Mr Birla also met his counterpart from the Parliament of Iran. The dignitaries discussed bilateral and multilateral issues of mutual interest.
