New Delhi, Aug 19 (UNI) Rail and road traffic on the old iron bridge across the Yamuna has been closed until further orders due to rising water level in the river which has already exceeded the warning level on Monday and is likely to hit the danger mark.
The order was issued on Monday from District Magistrate (East) office stating that due to incessant rain in the catchment area and release of water from the Hathni Kund barrage in Haryana the water level shall cross the danger mark which is at 207 mts.
The water has reached beyond 205 meters, which was above the warning level of 204.50 meters.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced that the priority of the government for the coming two days will be on evacuation of people from the low lying areas.
Haryana has released 8.28 lakh cusec of water, the Delhi Chief Minister said on Monday, who advised people living in Yamuna Flood Plains to evacuate & shift to tents set up by the government or head to their relatives' places.
He assured that the situation is under control so far and the government is working for the issue on priority basis.
Mr Kejriwal added that the Delhi government was on an alert mode and was working in coordination with the central government.
Around 2120 tents have been put in place with food arrangements and toilets on both the sides along the river bank.
CM said that around 23,860 people living along the river need to be safely evacuated.
He further appealed to the parents from these areas to prevent children from going anywhere close to the waters.
All the government agencies are working in close coordination for preventing people from being hit by flood conditions.
Boats are already stationed at more than 30 sensitive locations along the banks of the river, an official said.
Around 53 boats in total are on alert and the officials of districts in Delhi like North, North East, Central and South East are on alert.
Around 30 boats are stationed for rescue work at different sensitive low lying locations along the river.
