Number of air travelers balloons for 11 months in row; touches 10 mln mark

New Delhi, Sep 24 (UNI) Amidst stiff competition between airline companies and the arrival of new cities on the aviation map, the number of air travelers across the country has crossed 10 million mark in August for the 11th consecutive month.
According to the data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation here on Monday, the number of passengers rose by 17.17 per cent as compared to August 2017 and reached 18.15 million in August this year.
In August last year, the number of air passengers on domestic routes was 96.90 lakh. For the 48th consecutive month since September 2014, the growth rate of the number of air travelers has been in the tenth digit.
Between January and August this year, the number of domestic air passengers rose by 21.20 per cent to 9.73 million. During the same period last year, the number was 7.54 crore.
Regional connectivity scheme “UDAN”, launched by the Government to include small and medium cities in the air network is bearing fruits. The cities that were untouched on the air map are joining the aviation market.
According to statistics, in the case of the number of passengers, the domestic market was still dominated by IndiGo in August. Its market share stood at 41.9 per cent and a total of 47.57 lakh passengers travelled on its flights.
Jet Airways came at second with 13.8 per cent and the government airline Air India is third with 12.7 per cent. After this, the share of SpiceJet was 12.4 per cent, GoAir's 8.9 per cent, Air Asia's 4.7 per cent and Vistara 3.7 per cent.
SpiceJet's performance was once again the best in the case of flying with loaded seats. On average, its flights filled with 93.6 per cent seats followed by GoAir 84.6 per cent, IndiGo 82.8 per cent, Air India 82.3 per cent, Jet Airways 82 per cent, Vistara 81.5 per cent, Jet Light 79.2 per cent, Air Asia 76.2 per cent and Trujet 75.7 per cent respectively.
Air Deccan and Air Odisha, which have got allocation on most of routes under the first phase of ‘UDAN’ scheme, were not able to attract passengers. In August, Air Deccan's only 52.3 per cent and Air Odisha's 24.9 per cent seats could be filled.
