Noted percussionist Guru Banamali Maharana passes away

Bhubaneswar, Nov 17 (UNI) Noted percussionist Guru Banamali Maharana passed
away here today following protracted illness.
He was 77.
Family sources said Guru Maharana was admitted at a private- hospital here for
treatment where he breathed his last.
Born on May 16,1941 in Raghurajpur village of Puri district, Maharana began his
formal training of playing Mardala and Tabla at Annapurna Theatre in Puri.
He was associated with noted Odissi guru late Kelucharan Mahapatra and was
playing Mardala in Odissi music and dance.
He was also an accompanying percussionist for famous Odissi dancers like
Sanjukta Panigrahi, , Sonal Mansingh, Priyambada Hejmadi, Aruna Mohanty and
Sujata Mohapatra.
Maharana was conferred with the prestigious Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi
Award in 1994, Kendriya Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2004 and the Kabi
Samrat Upendra Bhanja Sanman in 2016.
