No relief for Geelani, Shabir also put under house arrest in Srinagar

Srinagar, May 26 (UNI) There was no relief for chairman of hardline Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani while chief of Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) leader Shabir Ahmad Shah was again put under house arrest in Srinagar, where separatists have given a call for protest after Friday prayers against rewarding the Army Major who used a man as human-shield on April 9 in Central Kashmir district of Badgam. However, there was no restriction on other separatist leaders, including chairman of moderate HC Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Mohammad Yaseen Malik. Both the factions of the HC and JKLF, spearheading the agitation have urged the people to hold peaceful protests in their respective areas against using Farooq Ahmad Dar as human-shield by Army during bypoll in Srinagar parliamentary constituency on April 9. Mr Geelani remained under house arrest during the past one year, a spokesman of the HC said here adding the amalgam chairman was not even being allowed to move out to offer prayers in a mosque. He said a large number of security forces and State police personnel remained deployed outside the Hyderpora residence of Mr Geelani. However, he said, a 5-member delegation led by Mani Shanker Aiyer, was allowed to meet Mr Geelani yesterday. Mr Geelani told the delegation that peace in the Kashmir Valley and good relations between India and Pakistan were possible only after the resolution of the Kashmir issue as per the wishes of the people. Spokesman said Mr Geelani also raised the alleged human rights violations in the Valley, particularly use of pellets, arrest and torture of youths. Meanwhile, Shabir Ahmad Shah, chief of DFP, a constituent of hardline HC, said he was again put under house arrest since late last night. He was released only yesterday only to put under house arrest again, said Shah who also met the delegation separately yesterday. UNI BAS SNU 1058
