Nitish launches universal old age pension scheme in Bihar

Patna, Jun 14 (UNI) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today launched universal old age pension scheme in the state.

Mr Kumar, while launching the scheme, said it would not only help the elderly to meet their basic needs but also ensure their place of dignity in their families.

He said that the scheme had been rolled out to cover maximum number of old persons in the state. Already, two months' pension money had been directly transferred into the accounts of beneficiaries, to mark the launch of this ambitious social welfare scheme in the state, he added.

"Old persons who attained the age of 60 years are eligible to get benefits under the scheme and as per an estimate, 35 to 36 lakhs persons will be able to take advantage of the scheme," the chief minister said.

He said, a sum of Rs 400 per month would be given as pension to old persons under the scheme, and it will be no longer limited to the old living below the poverty line as it has been made universal.

Mr Kumar said that government officials and staff at block level should make the people aware about the scheme so that maximum number of beneficiaries could be covered.

Publicity should be done about the scheme through TV, Radio, Social Media and Newspapers, he suggested.
