Nitish calls on PM demanding higher flood relief

Nitish calls on PM demanding higher flood relief
New Delhi, Aug 23 (UNI) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi here this morning seeking review of the Farakka barrage and preventing annual flooding of the flood-ravaged state. The CM, who was cordially received by the PM, has requested that a team of experts should be sent to evaluate the utility of the Farakka barrage and suggests ways at silt management, he told reporters after the meeting. His arrival in the national capital comes amid worsening flood situation in Bihar where more than five lakh people have been affected and over 2 lakh people rendered homeless in the state. Farakka Barrage, located at the Bengal-Bihar border, diverts Ganga water into Bengal's Hooghly river and help in desiltation process. But over the years, due to heavy silt deposit, the barrage has not proved effective. While the PM has assured that a team of experts will be sent to Bihar to study the ground situation, Mr Nitish Kumar told reporters that the state has demanded higher compensation to undertake massive relief and rescue operations in the state. ''There has been massive damage, for example, the banana plantations in Vaishali are all finished. Roads have been washed away and infrastructure badly damaged. We will restore everything and for that we would need funds," he said. Stating that the state government was putting priority on rescue and relief work, he said the extent of damage assessment in monetary terms would take place only by next week or so. With water levels of the Ganga and Sone rivers flowing above the danger mark, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has sent 10 additional teams to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to help the state governments in rescue efforts. ''Floods have damaged more than 20 districts. But complete information can be given after damage assessment,'' he told reporters here. The CM two days ago demanded removal of the Farakka barrage on Ganga river and protecting the state from the inundating flood waters after undertaking an aerial survey of the flood-hit six districts including Patna where public anger is mounting over the inadequate government aid provided so far.
