NIA takes up probe of killing of Shaurya Chakra awardee Balwinder Singh Sandhu in Punjab

New Delhi, Jan 27 (UNI) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday took up the investigation into the killing of Shaurya Chakra awardee Balwinder Singh Sandhu by two unidentified men in the early hours of October 16 last year at the residence-cum-school run by him in Bhikiwind in Tarn Taran of Punjab.
Considering the gravity of the offence and its inter-state and international ramifications, the Union Home Ministry directed NIA to take up the investigation of the case and the probe agency has re-registered the case as RC 01/2021/NIA/DLI dated January 26 and took up the investigation.
The assailants after committing the murder of Balwinder Singh Sandhu, had immediately escaped on a motorcycle and the local police registered a case under sections 302, 34, IPC and 25, 27 Arms Act regarding the crime in Bhikhiwind police station in the Tarn Taran on the statement of Ms Jagdish Kaur, wife of the deceased.
During the peak of terrorism in Punjab, Balwinder Singh and his family had fearlessly fought terrorists and for his fearless fight, Central Government awarded him “Shaurya Chakra” in 1993. Besides him, his wife Jagdish Kaur, his elder brother Ranjit Singh and his wife Balraj Kaur had also received the Shaurya Chakra.
In the initial investigation, it was revealed that the killing was executed under a conspiracy hatched by Pakistan based Khalistani terrorist Lakvir Singh Rode and his handlers in Pakistani intelligence agency, ISI.
“The killing of Comrade Balwinder Singh was executed through Sukhmeet Pal Singh aka Sukh Bhikariwal of Bhikariwal in Gurdaspur district, a gangster turned terrorist,” the NIA said.
