NHRC notice to TN DGP over reported suicide in police custody in Cuddalore

New Delhi, Jul 12 (UNI) Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports of a prisoner committing suicide in police custody at Cuddalore district on July 11, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday issued notice to Tamil Nadu DGP JK Tripathy, demanded report in the matter, within six weeks.

The Commission demanded Mr Tripathy to provide them with a detailed report in the matter, including the Inquest Report, the Post-Mortem Examination Report and report of the Magisterial Enquiry, conducted in the matter.

"The Commission has not yet received any formal intimation from the state police authorities in pursuance of its guidelines issued on the subject", an official statement said here.

It further said the Commission has observed that apparently due to negligence of the police personnel, an accused, who was in their custody, lost life, which amounts to violation of his human rights.

"It was the duty of the police officials to be careful about the safety of the person in their custody", the human rights body said.

According to media reports, the 24-year-old victim, resident of Oorithiraisolai area in Cuddalore district, was arrested by police on Thursday, at 0945 hrs, for withdrawing Rs 1,200 from several accounts with stolen ATM cards.

He was taken to police station and after a few minutes, he told the police personnel that he wanted to urinate. The accused went to the washroom, where he allegedly hung himself from the window of the toilet, using a lungi, at 1045 hrs.

As per the police, the deceased had a case registered against him in 2017 at Karur Town Police Station for deceitfully withdrawing Rs 37000, using stolen ATM cards.

He was taken to the Government Hospital, Kattumannarkoil, where he died during treatment.
