NFF urges high level probe into reported firing on fishermen

Puducherry, Nov 15 (UNI) National Fishworkers Forum (NFF) today demanded a high level probe by the Defence ministry into the reported firing on Rameswaram fishermen by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) personnel.
In a statement here, NFF Chairperson M Illango said the fishermen lodged a complaint that the coast guard personnel fired at them and provided the bullet as evidence. They also sustained injuries.
However, this was denied by the Coast Guard and in this backdrop a high level probe in necessary.
Mr Illango also demanded a CBI probe into the incident.
He further said that if the Coast Guard fired at the innocent fishermen who ventured into the sea to earn their livelihood, it is also a violation of Human Rights. Hence, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) should also inquire into it.
He said that the truth will come out with the separate inquires by three different agencies and it would also prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
