Washington, Dec 21 (UNI) Colombia has reported its first three Omicron cases, according to the National Institute of Health.
Meanwhile, Texas's Harris County has confirmed first Omicron-related death.
CNN quoted Health Minister Fernando Ruiz as saying on Monday that all three cases were detected in travelers who had arrived from the United States and Spain.
While two of the cases were found in Cartagena and one in Santa Marta. Both are popular tourist destinations on Colombia's Caribbean coast.
However, there is "no community circulation yet" of the variant, the Health Minister added.
The man who died in Texas was, however, unvaccinated and had previously been infected with Covid-19, the Harris County Public Health stated.
"The individual was at higher risk of severe complications from Covid-19 due to his unvaccinated status and had underlying health conditions," it added.
According to CNN report, this is the first known confirmed Omicron-related death in the United States.
Omicron has caused over 73 per cent new Covid-19 cases in the US last week, according to the CDC data.
