WHO warns of long drawn out virus pandemic as cases in Asia spike

United Nations, Aug 2 (UNI) The World Health Organisation (WHO) warned on Sunday that the fight against the coronavirus pandemic would be lengthy one and could lead to "response fatigue", as countries with high population especially in Asia report record rise in new cases in recent days.
The World Health Organization declared the coronavirus epidemic a global emergency some six months ago and since then the novel coronavirus also known as COVID-19 has killed more than 680,000 people and infected more than 17.5 million around the world.
While most countries in the world has been hit by the COVID pandemic, it is the particularly the countries of Asia which is causing concern for the world health body. The main reasons are that most Asian countries have huge populations and inadequate health care systems and most, including Japan have been reporting an increase in COVID cases in recent days despite tightened restrictions, the WHO website reported.
Japan's Okinawa declared a state of emergency after a record jump in cases on the island -- many linked to US military forces stationed there.
Hong Kong meanwhile opened a new makeshift hospital to house COVID-19 patients after cases rose to new highs.
Philippines,Iran, Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia to name a few have all reported record jumps in COVID cases.
