Moscow says installation of arms on Ivan Papanin icebreaker should not generate questions

Moscow, Jul 28 (Sputnik) Russia's Ivan Papanin is not a classic icebreaker but a military ship, therefore the mounting of weapons on it should not trigger any questions, Russian Foreign Ministry's Ambassador-at-Large Nikolai Korchunov told Sputnik in an interview.
This came as a comment to a statement by US Naval Forces Europe/Africa Commander Adm. James Foggo, who noted that Ivan Papanin was designed to carry Kalibr cruise missiles and qualified this as a sign of "aggressive approach in the Arctic."
"We are not aware of the accusations in question. Perhaps, you mean statements by the US military regarding the Ivan Papanin icebreaker. Meanwhile, this is not a classic icebreaker but a multifunctional patrol ship created for the Russian Navy. The fact that weapons are mounted on a military ship should hardly generate questions, especially given that the weapons do not contradict international agreements that our country participates in, like in the case with the sea-based Kalibr missiles," Korchunov said.
