Rights NGO calls for 'fixing' sanctions to avert famine in Afghanistan

New York, Nov 11 (UNI/Sputnik) Major donor countries, together with the United Nations and international financial institutions should adjust sanctions and economic policies to stop Afghanistan from slipping into famine after the Taliban took over, a prominent rights group said on Thursday.
"Afghanistan's economy and social services are collapsing, with Afghans throughout the country already suffering acute malnutrition. Humanitarian aid is critical, but given the crisis, governments, the UN, and international financial institutions need to urgently adjust existing restrictions and sanctions affecting the country's economy and banking sector," John Sifton, Asia advocacy director at Human Rights Watch (HRW), said.
The situation in Afghanistan has significantly aggravated in August, when the Taliban entered the capital of Kabul, dismantling the previous government and taking the rest of the country under control. The effects of the takeover include huge monetary losses, a liquidity crisis, and a surge in prices of essential products, leading to shortages of food, water, healthcare, and housing for vast segments of the population, according to the NGO.
